An attachment is part of a machine system. Matching a breaker, auger or grapple by excavator weight alone leaves important questions unanswered. Give the supplier the carrier details and intended work, then request written confirmation of the proposed combination from the people responsible for its suitability.
Identify the actual carrier
Record make, model, configuration and serial or fleet identifier where available. Include the installed coupler and the attachment mounting details. Similar model names do not prove that pin dimensions, couplers or hydraulic arrangements are the same.
Send clear photographs of identification plates and connections through the supplier's preferred channel. Ask who checks compatibility and who performs installation. Avoid making dimensional assumptions from a photograph or from a previous hire on a different unit.
Describe the hydraulic and control needs
Ask the supplier which flow, pressure, return and control arrangements the proposed attachment requires, and whether the carrier can supply them. Record whether additional lines, controls or setup are included in the hire offer.
These are procurement questions, not instructions to change machine settings. Any setup or adjustment belongs with authorised personnel using the relevant manufacturer information. Allocate time for the supplier to check and commission the combination before productive work is scheduled.
Example: replacing a bucket with a breaker
A crew prices a breaker for a trench but the offer excludes hoses and transport. The receiving excavator also needs its configuration checked. The corrected package identifies the breaker, mounting interface, connections, setup appointment and separate freight before the shift is booked.
The useful comparison is the complete working package. Ask about consumables, wear charges, inspection records and how the attachment should be returned. Confirm whether the carrier hire agreement permits that attachment and who records its condition at handover.
Plan the changeover and return
Arrange the receiving location, installation contact and a suitable window for the changeover. Confirm storage and transport arrangements for the displaced attachment. An idle bucket or attachment still needs an agreed return path.
Keep the delivery record tied to the specific attachment identifier. Note existing wear with the supplier, and agree how a fault is reported. If the material changes, pause the procurement assumption and ask the supplier to reassess suitability before continuing the planned scope.
Common questions
Does excavator tonnage prove compatibility?
No. Tonnage is an initial filter. The mounting system, carrier configuration and attachment requirements also need confirmation.
Should hoses be included in the quote?
Ask for them to be explicitly included or excluded along with couplings, setup, transport and consumables. Do not assume the attachment price covers a working installation.
