Contact information is stronger than operational detail
All 418 records contained a website and 409 contained a phone number. Equipment categorisation was present in 304 records. Only 83 recorded at least one answer for wet hire, dry hire or operated hire, including a recorded “no”. That is approximately one in five records with any hire-model answer, not one in five suppliers offering hire.
Three practical consequences
1. A service area is not a dispatch location
Only 57 records had at least one location explicitly marked as a physical depot. The remaining records may still represent businesses with depots; the field simply does not establish that fact. Ask where the proposed unit is located for your dates, then price the actual delivery and return journey. A head-office address cannot answer that question.
2. A category is a starting point
A record labelled earthmoving may help you find a supplier to call, but it does not establish an excavator’s mass, reach, attachment interface or availability. Send the task and constraints first. Request a named configuration and ask what would change if the offered unit were substituted.
3. Missing information deserves a question
Do not interpret an empty hire-model field as “dry hire only” or an absent summary as poor service. These are information gaps in this directory. A structured enquiry can resolve them without guessing: equipment, operator, dispatch point, support, included hours and the event that ends charging.
How we counted
This is an editorial snapshot of the Heavy Plant Hire directory API retrieved on 24 September 2026, in five paginated batches, covering 418 records. It is not a survey of the Australian industry and does not measure service quality, active fleet size or availability. The live directory may change after this date.
Website and phone counts mean the corresponding field was populated; we did not test every phone or website. Category count means at least one category slug. Hire-model count means at least one of wet_hire, dry_hire or operated_hire was non-null, including false. Physical-depot count means at least one location had physical_depot set to true. A substantive summary means more than 40 characters and excludes the directory’s generic “Australian plant, equipment or related hire supplier” template.
Our editorial response
We distinguish directory coverage from a confirmed local depot, disclose unknown hire models and label supplier-website research separately. The first four website reviews cover Brooks Hire, Orange Hire, Porter Plant and Bendigo Plant Hire & Civil. These reviews add provenance; they do not certify the fleet or endorse a business.
